What Is a Renewable Heating System?

Renewable heating systems utilise renewable energy, which comes from a replenishable source, such as wind, water or the sun. Energy is generated from these natural sources in the form of heat or electricity, which is used to power systems in a more environmentally-friendly manner, as fossil fuel emissions are reduced.

The Benefits of Renewable Heating

Eco-friendly

Renewable energy is better for the environment in comparison to fossil fuels which cause significant damage to the planet and contribute to global warming. By installing a renewable heating system in your home, you can do your part for the planet and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Low-maintenance

Many renewable heating systems, such as ground source heat pumps, require less maintenance than conventional heating systems. Waste is also significantly reduced.

Unlimited access

One of the biggest advantages of renewable energy is that it is rarely in short supply, which means there is no need to worry about heating or electrical issues.

The Three Types of Renewable Heating Systems We Install

Air Source Heat Pumps

An air source heat pump works by heating natural air with an electrically-powered compressor. The hot air is then transferred to radiators or underfloor heating within your home. Water can also be stored in a cylinder, which can be used for taps, baths and showers.

There are two main types of air source heat pumps, including air-to-air pumps, which process air from the outside to a fan. These require a warm air circulation system and do not produce hot water. Air-to-water heat pumps are ideal for homes with larger radiators or wet underfloor heating. This type of heat pump is eligible for renewable heat incentive payments, which is a government-run scheme that encourages the use of renewable energy.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

A ground source heat pump is powered by low-temperature solar energy or underground water to provide heating and hot water to a property. It works by compressing and condensing the natural source of energy which enables it to reach a high temperature.

The heat generated by ground source heat pumps can be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating, and the water can also be stored for later use. Ground source heat pumps require a significant amount of outdoor space, as the heat pump must be installed underground. They are typically suited to new-build properties, as retrofitting a heat pump is more time-consuming.
